# Our Mission The Israel Defense Forces is the military of the State of Israel. Its activities are subject to the authority of the democratic civil government of Israel. The purpose of the IDF is to preserve the State of Israel, to protect its independence, and to foil attempts by its enemies to disrupt the normal life within it. Soldiers of the IDF shall act according to the values of the IDF and its commands, while abiding to the law, upholding human dignity, and respecting the values of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state. # The Spirit of the IDF **The Spirit of the IDF** defines the values of the IDF. It underlies the activities of every IDF soldier throughout his or her regular or reserve service. **The Spirit of the IDF** and the practical rules derived from it are the ethical code of the IDF. The Spirit of the IDF shall direct the IDF, its soldiers, commanders, units and corps in their activities. All human beings are of inherent value regardless of race, faith, nationality, gender or status. # Our Soldiers The State of Israel requires every Israeli citizen over the age of 18 who is Jewish, Druze or Circassian to serve in the Israel Defense Forces (although there are some notable exceptions). Other Israeli Arabs, religious women, married individuals, and those deemed unfit medically or mentally are exempt from compulsory military service. Regardless of those exemptions, many of those exempt from military service do volunteer to serve in the Israel Defense Forces. Once enlisted, men are expected to serve for a minimum of 32 months and women are expected to serve for a minimum of 24 months. # Chronological Order of Past Chiefs of Staff The Chief of the General Staff is the head of the Israel Defense Forces and has the rank of Lieutenant General, the highest rank in the IDF. The MAG Corps, as it is today, was established in 1948 concurrent with the IDF, as the "Military Prosecution". In 1950, the unit was renamed the Military Advocate General's Corps. The MAG Corps is responsible for implementing the rule of law within the IDF. The unit's objectives include integrating the rule of law amongst IDF commanders and soldiers; providing commanders with the tools for the effective performance of their missions in accordance with the law; and helping the IDF achieve its goals on all legal fronts. Special emphasis is placed on the MAG Corps' ability to provide legal advice in emergencies and during warfare. The MAG Corps operates as the bridge between the legal and military contexts, and as such MAG Corps officers are proficient in both the law as well as the military's needs. In order to achieve its objectives the MAG Corps maintains five separate and distinct departments: * [**The Military Prosecution**](https://www.idf.il/en/mini-sites/military-advocate-general-s-corps/military-prosecution/#:~:text=The%20Military%20Prosecution%20is%20responsible,of%20the%20military%20justice%20system.) is responsible for upholding the rule of law in the IDF by enforcing the law against IDF soldiers that have committed offences under the jurisdiction of the military justice system. Additionally, the Military Prosecution is responsible for prosecuting residents of Judea and Samaria that have violated the law and are under the jurisdiction of the Military Courts. * [**The International Law Department**](https://www.idf.il/en/mini-sites/military-advocate-general-s-corps/international-law-department/) provides international law advice to the IDF, and acts as expert at the national level concerning the Law of Armed Conflict and the international law in the cyber realm. * [**The Legal Advice and Legislative Affairs Department**](https://www.idf.il/en/mini-sites/military-advocate-general-s-corps/legal-advice-and-legislative-affairs-department/) provides legal advice to all IDF entities on matters of constitutional, public, administrative and civil law. * [**The Department of the Legal Advisor to the Region of Judea and Samaria**](https://www.idf.il/en/mini-sites/military-advocate-general-s-corps/department-of-the-legal-advisor-to-the-region-of-judea-and-samaria/#:~:text=The%20Department%20of%20the%20Legal,in%20fulfilling%20their%20functions%20while) provides legal advice to entities operating in the Judea and Samaria region, including the IDF Central Command and the Civil Administration, on legal issues in the fields of security and civil affairs. * [**The Military Defense**](https://www.idf.il/en/mini-sites/military-advocate-general-s-corps/military-defense/) provides legal advice and representation to any IDF soldier under investigation or standing trial in the military justice system, upon their request. While remaining a part of the MAG Corps, the Military Defense enjoys complete professional independence. **For more information about legal rights and representation see** [**here**](https://www.idf.il/en/mini-sites/military-advocate-general-s-corps/legal-rights-and-representation/)**.** Additionally, the MAG Corps operates a [**School of Military Law**](https://www.idf.il/en/mini-sites/military-advocate-general-s-corps/school-of-military-law/#:~:text=The%20School%20of%20Military%20Law%20assists%20the%20Deputy%20Military%20Advocate,or%20ordering%20a%20new%20hearing), which is responsible for training in the IDF on matters of military law and for the professional development of those serving in the MAG Corps. Additionally, the School of Military Law trains and accredits IDF officers to conduct disciplinary proceedings and coordinates the process for requests by soldiers for pardons or sentence mitigation. At the head of the MAG Corps stands the Military Advocate General, who is the highest legal authority in the IDF and whose professional decisions bind all units in the IDF. The Military Advocate General is subject to no authority other than the law. This professional independence extends to subordinate military lawyers, who are subject to the authority only of their immediate MAG Corps commanders, and who in turn are subject only to the Military Advocate General. The Deputy Military Advocate General fills the Military Advocate General's role in his or her absence, and is responsible for human resources, organization and budget in the MAG Corps. Additionally, he or she is responsible for supervising disciplinary proceedings in the IDF and for coordinating requests for pardons or sentence mitigation by soldiers to the President of the State of Israel. Those that serve in the MAG Corps have a deep understanding of the significance of their task and the responsibility that rests on their shoulders. These officers handle this responsibility with a sense of purpose and with dedication to the IDF and to the rule of law. # Military Rabbinate The unit of the Military Rabbinate was created at the same time as the Israel Defense Forces in 1948. This unit works in cooperation with the Manpower Directorate. The Dado Center, under the command of Brigadier General Eran Ortal, consists of career officers and civilian researchers from a range of military and security-related disciplines. In order to fulfill its purpose, the Center operates in five main efforts: **Development of a general approach for the implementation of the operational-strategic thinking process in a military context.** **Training senior leadership in the spirit of the general approach for military systemic thinking:** The Dado Center runs seminars for colonels entering positions in the major IDF commands. Today, the Center holds two seminars a year for the IDF's operational staff, and one seminar a year for senior officers in the force design system. Additional seminars are held in conjunction with the National Security College, Command and Staff College, and various units per request. **Support of major command strategic learning processes:** The Dado Center assists IDF headquarters, working primarily with Brigadier-Generals and Generals to conduct learning processes whose purpose is to develop new operational-strategic concepts. The Center is involved in processes like the development of a strategy for the northern theater, led by the Northern Command, knowledge development in the Central Command, the development of operational concepts in the Southern Command, the development of future land maneuver concepts in the Ground Forces Command, and more. **Research Center:** The Dado Center focuses on research that examines IDF concepts in different periods, assists strategic learning processes, and examines phenomena relevant to the challenges facing the IDF, including cyber, the nature of the Qualitative Military Edge, the strategic and operational planning process, the tunnel threat and the underground realm, and many other issues. **The Dado Center Journal for Operational Art:** The journal is a platform for the Center's publications, as well as a platform for IDF officers' and academic researchers' systemic and conceptual writing. DCJ issues are organized around subjects, whose goal is to create a systemic discussion and to expand knowledge in core fields in which the IDF is involved – Frontier Regions (volume 1) , Processes of Organizational Change (volume 2), the Cyber World (volume 3), Military Force Design (volumes 6 and 7), the General Staff (volume 8) and other subjects. DCJ features writing that comes from a critical systems approach, one reflects the Dado Center's proactive agenda.
